BGPVPN-based Service Chaining - AT&T
Service chaining plays an important role in network function virtualization by stitching together an ordered list of virtual network functions, such as routers, firewalls, load balancers etc., to achieve a particular complex service that previously required multiple physical appliances.
AT&T partnered with Ericsson and ClearPath to show BGP VPN-based service chaining across multiple data centers. This PoC includes:
- End-to-end L3VPN connectivity between two data centers is set up by Ericsson SDN Controller.
- KVM and NFVi running within each data center are managed by Ericsson using OpenStack.
- An OpenStack compliant Ericsson Cloud Manager (ECM) is used to orchestrate and configure SDN Controller components.
- Intra-VM/container service chaining for multiple VNFs is enabled by ClearPath.
In this PoC, one or more L4/L7 VNFs are instantiated within a VNF Container which in turn is instantiated within a VM. The L4/L7 VNFs are service chained together within the VNF Container to support variable service combinations. Service chaining VNFs across different data centers utilize L2/L3 traffic steering between those data centers.
