Panel Discussion

The motion was CARRIED at the event, but do you agree? Cast your vote above in our audience poll.

This debate fell into two parts with the first representing where the CSPs are today on their individual cloud journeys, followed by four very different suppliers and how they are adjusting their own offerings to meet those CSP needs. View the supplier perspective here.

Beth Cohen, SDN Product Strategist, Verizon - We’ve already been on the cloud journey for five years! 5G is 100% cloud.  The majority running today is VM-based. Cloud native is a goal and beginning to shape activities.
Franz Seiser, Vice President Core Network & PaaS and Infrastructure Cloud, Deutsche Telekom AG - DT, being spread across many countries doesn’t have a single approach. In some countries the POTS still remains central to the strategy and the business case to shift to something else is questionable. Infrastructure issues are getting solved but operations is still a difficult area.
Marcus Brunner, Head of Standardization, Open Source and Eco-System Development, Swisscom - Swisscom’s IPTV platform almost ten years ago was cloud.  SD-WAN for small business was justified by the on-demand ordering from this segment. This has just been implemented with the new capabilities of NFV. Mobile core is currently run on NFV. Just trialling the new standalone 5G for the core.
Vittorio Orsatti, Network Strategy & Architecture Manager, Three - Role is to futureproof the network. The cloud journey started around four years ago with the realisation that the network had to be scalable and flexible in order to cope with the on-coming onslaught of data. A more distributed topology, distributing transport out into BT nodes, all applications sitting on a common infrastructure plus all BSS sitting in a public cloud.
