Cambridge gets major broadband boost with Vodafone full-fibre service

4,500 Cambridge households to have access to the service within the first three months of 2020.

15 Jan 2020 - Cambridge, UK - Residents and small businesses in Cambridge are now receiving some of the fastest internet speeds in the UK thanks to Vodafone Gigafast Full Fibre Broadband.

With speeds of up to 900Mbps, Vodafone Gigafast Full Fibre Broadband gives users download speeds 20 times faster and upload speeds 150 times faster than the average home broadband connection in the UK. For example, this will allow the whole family to stream their favourite films, play online games or upload videos and photos across multiple devices with almost no time lag or buffering – all at the same time.

Vodafone Gigafast Full Fibre Broadband is live in Chesterton and Kings Hedges, and will be available in more places in Cambridge as CityFibre, the UK’s largest alternative provider of wholesale fibre network infrastructure, deploys the full fibre network over the next two years.

The first customer to benefit from Vodafone Gigafast Full Fibre Broadband service in Cambridge is Matthew Neave from Embassy Lettings & Management. Matthew said: “I’m really excited to be one of the first Vodafone customers to connect to the Gigafast service. I will principally be using the service for my residential lettings business based here in Cambridge. We are 98% paperless and we rely heavily on a fast and reliable broadband service for uploading and downloading large documents. The service will allow me to do this quickly and safely which is imperative for the business.”

Max Taylor, Vodafone UK’s Consumer Director, added: “The introduction of full fibre broadband to Cambridge provides residents, students and the growing number of technology start-ups with ultra-fast and reliable digital connectivity. We are working with our infrastructure partner, CityFibre, to connect up homes across the city with the aim to offer more than 4,500 households access to the service within the first three months of 2020.”

Charles Kitchin, CityFibre’s City Manager for Cambridge, said: “Today’s announcement follows a £20m investment from CityFibre to bring a gigabit-capable full fibre network to Cambridge. We are making the city one of the best-connected places in the country. We’ve made huge progress so far, it is tremendous to see the first homes and businesses now reaping the benefits of full fibre and seeing first-hand the difference it can make to their lives.”

Residents in Cambridge can find out more about the Gigafast service, and pre-register, by visiting the Vodafone store located in the Grand Arcade, Cambridge or by going online.
