TIM: First phase of the Italian Recovery and Resilience Plan tenders ‘Italia 1 Giga’ and ‘5G backhauling’ completed

The TIM Group has closed the first phase of the Plans for the ‘Italia 1 Giga’ and ‘5G backhauling’ tenders, under the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP). The first milestone in the plan for infrastructure work in the Italia 1 Giga tender was reached when more than 14,100 addresses in 90 Italian municipalities coming under the lots won were equipped with an ultrabroadband connection. Furthermore, in 95 municipalities making up the lots which TIM was awarded in the ‘5G Backhauling’ tender, the necessary work has been carried out to activate 5G mobile network infrastructure to provide advanced services to over 150 sites.

As regards the ‘Italia 1 Giga’ Plan the grouping comprised of TIM and FiberCop was awarded 7 of the 15 lots tendered out by Infratel Italia, with a value of more than 1.6 billion euros in funding, as well as approximately 700 million euros in direct investment from the TIM Group. The Regions concerned are Piedmont, Valle d’Aosta, Liguria, Abruzzo, Molise, Sardinia, Umbria, Marche, Calabria and Basilicata, as well as the autonomous Provinces of Trento and Bolzano.

As the only winner of the Backhauling Plan, concerning fibre links between 5G mobile sites, TIM is also equipping the 6 lots won (which regard the whole country) with the necessary infrastructure to improve mobile network performance. The public funding is worth 700 million euros, with another 100 million euros in direct investment.

Elisabetta Romano, TIM’s Chief Network, Operations & Wholesale Officer stresses that “The completion of the first phase of both tenders funded by the NRRP marks an important step forward in the digitalisation of Italy. We are particularly proud to share our expertise to contribute to meeting the targets set for the creation of new fixed and mobile network infrastructure.  For TIM - Italy’s leading Operator, which has been awarded the highest number of tenders covered by the NRRP - this is an important result, achieved thanks to the collaboration with Infratel Italia."

TIM, through FiberCop, is also continuing its mission to create an ultrabroadband network throughout the country.  FiberCop already guarantees a coverage of over 94% of fixed lines thanks to FTTC and FTTH technologies and will continue to develop FTTH coverage, with a connection speed of up to 10 Gigabit, with the aim of covering approximately 60% of households nationwide.
