Rakuten Mobile UN-LIMIT applications surpass 2 million

Via Rakuten Mobile press room

Jan 3, 2021

Tokyo - Rakuten Mobile, Inc. today announced that the total number of applications for the Rakuten UN-LIMIT service plan launched on April 8, 2020, has surpassed 2 million as of December 30, 2020.

The Rakuten UN-LIMIT service plan offers unlimited data use within Rakuten network areas and unlimited domestic calls using the Rakuten Link app for a monthly fee of 2,980 yen. The service plan also offers an attractive 5GB of data per month within service areas provided by Rakuten Mobile’s domestic roaming partner, in addition to a maximum data transmission speed of 1Mbps after using the allocated 5GB of data*1,2. Rakuten Mobile also offers a range of popular incentives and campaigns including offering 3 million customers their first year of service free of charge*3 and incentives for product purchases*4. On September 30, 2020, Rakuten Mobile further improved its offering of convenient customer services with the launch of the Rakuten UN-LIMIT V service plan, including 5G and 4G service*5 for the same monthly fee as the previous 4G plan.

In November 2020, Rakuten Mobile launched its Zero Declaration, a range of initiatives aimed at improving convenience for customers and promoting a mobile market in which customers can more freely choose the carrier service to suit their own needs. Designed to redefine expectations for mobile carrier services, these initiatives include elimination of handling fees, mobile number portability (MNP) transfer fees and contract cancellation fees, as well as free-of-charge exchange and re-issue of SIM cards.

Rakuten Mobile has built the world’s first fully virtualized cloud native mobile network*6. This network architecture allows for substantial reductions in capital investment and operation costs, enabling the operator to pass on savings to subscribers through a simple and affordable service plan. Rakuten Mobile will continue to expand coverage for its cutting-edge network nationwide, offer a wide variety of products and provide new services leveraging the Rakuten Ecosystem and Rakuten Points loyalty points program to deliver greater levels of convenience and comfort to customers.

*2 Unlimited data usage when connected to Rakuten base stations. Restrictions on transmission speeds may be applied depending on usage. Maximum transmission speed of 1Mbps after exceeding data allocation in domestic roaming partner network area is best effort (the maximum speed of the standard). Actual transmission speeds may vary depending on the network environment. Data intensive tasks, such as video streaming and downloading apps may take more time than usual.

*3 Limited to one contract and one application per customer. Charges apply for products purchased, option fees, call fees, etc. The number of eligible customers may change depending on the number of applications.

*4 For details of the campaigns currently underway, please see the Rakuten Mobile service page:

*5 Limited to areas where 5G service is provided. 5G coverage will be gradually expanded. Please refer to the following site for more details about the 5G service areas:
