Shekar Ayyar, Executive Vice President & General Manager, Telco NFV Group, VMware

Shekar outlines the reasons the telco network is well-placed to host cloud services. It’s been built on an inherently distributed architecture comprised of both mobile and fixed facilities such as cell towers, central offices and fibre networks, he says. If you bring all of that together you have multiple points of presence with proximity to business premises. So the telecom environment can become a distribution point for technologies like SD-WAN. The opportunity, therefore, is for telcos to connect the different business clouds across their networks, using VMware’s technology, to transform what is otherwise a rigid infrastructure and make it agile and multi-purpose.
