Irwin Jacobs, the Chairman and CEO of Qualcomm and long-time champion of the CDMA 1 and CDMA 2000 standards has suddenly, and perhaps rather surprisingly considering the long history of technological and commercial rivalry between the various standards, also thrown his weight behind WCDMA.

According to Dr. Jacobs, Qualcomm has really been a stalwart supporter of all the forms of CDMA throughout all the technology wars and now that there are more than 100 million CDMA 2000 users on the operator’s subscriber rolls and with the commercial launch of the WCDMA starting now and with the technology likely to be deployed widely in 2005, it is time to stand up and bang the drum for CDMA in all its manifestations – even including the home-grown Chinese variant, TD-SCDMA
