ECTA forms a CEO Council

August saw the announcement of a new ECTA initiative, which we believe will be of great importance for the industry and the Association. We have formed a CEO Council, initially comprising the CEO’s of 13 leading telecom operators across Europe, to advise and assist the Board of ECTA in dealing with matters of significance to the telecoms sector. The membership of the Council represents a broad geographical spread across the EU, with representatives from global, pan-European and national operators. We hope that this will serve to strengthen ECTA, by involving the leaders of the industry more closely with the work of the Association and improving our ability to influence politicians, regulators and EU officials.

The first meeting of the Council will take place in London in October. Following the meeting, a group of CEO’s will meet Stephen Carter, Chief Executive of OFCOM, the UK’s new converged regulatory authority, to discuss the progress of the Telecoms Review that the regulator is undertaking. The Review is intended to be a “root-and-branch” analysis of the industry and could have significant and lasting implications for all of us. The meeting, in the middle of Phase II of the Review, will be ideally timed for our CEO’s to give the views of the new entrants on the industry’s priorities to OFCOM.

Patrick Gallagher, CEO of FLAG Telecom, has agreed to be the first Chairperson of the Council. The other inaugural members of the body are:
