Long live grey power! Handset manufactures may be more concerned with jam-packing the latest features onto a device, but seniors have other needs. Fact is, this relatively untapped demographic often feels technologically alienated, which is ironic, considering the critical use mobile technology plays in medical emergencies, its ability to help the elderly retain their independence or to keep contact with friends & family.

Leila Makki investigates what types of communication devices are out there for the senior market. Interviews with Emporia Telecom, Doro and MyJoice.

Participants:

Eveline Pupeter-Fellner, CEO, Emporia Telecom

Chris Millington, Managing Director, Doro

Johan Eckerstein, CEO, MyJoice

We really think this is an overlooked market segment that has great potential.

This is really good initiative. Huge market to target and fulfill their needs. Technology must be used to give these services.

A very good initiative. You should look at a company in the USA called Jitterbug. They are located in the San Diego, California area. They have been marketing handsets to seniors for a few years now and have done quite a bit of research on seniors and their special needs for cellular phones.

Besides the companies in the video there are others producing senior-friendly products such as Jitterbug, Binatone, SmartlinQ, Amplicom and much more. However, they are not heavily marketed or advertised widely and most consumers are completely unaware of them.
