According to a newly published research report, a quarter of the British public now own "at least" two mobile phones. Some say they need a second contract to get the deal they "really wanted", others say they want to get their hands on the latest and trendiest handsets and yet another group cites privacy as the motivating factor, as Martyn Warwick reveals.

The survey, carried out by the market research house Opinium Research on behalf of moneysupermarket.com, distills the responses of 2002 mobile subscribers. It shows many Brits now have a mobile phone for work, usually supplied or paid for by employers, and a second one for private, social usage.

Interestingly, rather than buying handset models that can accommodate two SIM cards that a user can simply toggle between, or having the discipline to switch SIM cards after working hours, many British mobile subscribers prefer to have two different cell phones.
