Nokia gives operators billing role for Ovi

The battle of the app stores took a new twist last week when Nokia announced it would not only support carrier billing in the US for its Ovi Store it would do so in eight other countries as well. Strange because two weeks ago Nokia was apparently dropping operator billing from Ovi launch.

The reason for the about-face, as explained by Nokia's VP of product management George Linardos, was that Nokia expected an immediate lift of 70 per cent in sales with the move to operator billing, although he pointed out that this did not translate into 70 per cent extra revenues as a cut went to the operator.

Microsoft was the first to announce carrier billing as an option for its MarketPlace followed by RIM.
