Small cells are being used with 3G networks add capacity, and with LTE to help users get high throughput. They will also be essential in future 5G networks. But with tens of thousands of small cells required per operator region, prices need to fall.
Telcos also have to change the way they do business. They have to re-learn old skills such as negotiating with property owners to place their small cells, and develop new ways to manage cell sites – small cells need to be managed as clusters, rather than on an individual basis, with self-organising network technology at the network edge adjusting small cell characteristics.
