Nokia has announced its big push for Mobile World Congress: a ‘Pop-up Network’ service for mass events and a cloud-based ‘Nokia Geo-Data as a Service’ which “combines anonymized 3D geolocation data from devices with network data to provide accurate insight into network, device and application performance as well as subscriber behavior,” says Nokia

Both the above have been built and presented as ‘x as a service’ offerings, which might serve as a clue as to one of the directions the new merged entity (Nokia plus Alcatel-Lucent) intends to go in a market about to be severely buffeted by the introduction of virtualised infrastructure.

The old infrastructure market may not be what it was (not so many big margin boxes) but perhaps it involves new opportunities as telcos and vendors alike look to business models which might ride on all that unleashed computer power.

Certainly Nokia Geo-Data as a Service fits that bill. It is available under licence to support operator business functions through access to anonymised 3-D geolocation data from devices. The idea is to offer accurate insight into network, device and application performance as well as subscriber behavior. Nokia says the  insights are tailored to the needs of different operator functions. “For example, network planners can spot and correct areas where subscribers are experiencing poor service; marketing personnel can identify subscriber trends and implement campaigns to grow revenue from the most valuable subscribers; or sales executives can pinpoint where their network provides better service than its competitors to leverage with new corporate clients.”

The  Nokia Pop-up Network is designed to provide oodles of capacity on a temporary basis for big events where connectivity might be a prime concern, which covers a lot of events these days. Nokia says it can provide up to three times the average uplink speed and capacity at popular outdoor events, and comes as a complete package involving transportable LTE base stations coordinated by Nokia Centralized RAN capabilities, along with network planning and optimisation services.

The cloud-based Nokia Geo-Data as a Service is available under licence to support a wide variety of operator business functions and is accessed from a virtual cloud via a web browser. It combines anonymised 3-D geolocation data from devices with network data to provide accurate insight into network, device and application performance as well as subscriber behavior.
