Tod Sizer, VP Wireless Research, Bell Labs, Alcatel-Lucent

Bell Labs, the research arm of Alcatel-Lucent, has been working on 5G for the past five years. It believes that 5G is defining the next communications standard, rather than the next radio standard. In providing fast response times, such as car-to-car or the tactile internet, processing needs to move towards the edge of the network, through a distributed cloud architecture. But we also need to make today's multiple radio interfaces work seamlessly together, in addition to the creation of a new air interface.
