Time Warner Cable plotting 'evolutionary' all-IP future

Time Warner Cable is on course to replace MPEG-2 video, but the move to create an IPTV service is happening on “an evolutionary basis”, the company’s chairman-CEO Glenn Britt said during a fourth quarter earnings call. “What we’ve done is to initially create more capacity by using switched video and that’s stood us in good stead,” Britt said. “We most certainly over time will be going more and more towards all-digital.”

TWC continues to leak video subscribers – 129,000 more fled in Q4 – in competition with telcos like AT&T and Verizon. It’s also the only cable co to have Google set up shop in its backyard – in Kansas City. Britt said Google’s 1Gbit/s offer is just “PR and hype”, adding: “the reality is today there are not really applications that require 1Gbit/s.
