Ericsson boosts Unwired Planet with wireless patent sale

Unwired Planet has purchased a portfolio of nearly 2,000 patents from Ericsson, including intellectual property relating to 2G, 3G and LTE technologies. The purchase increases the patent holdings of Unwired Planet from 260 to well over 2,000. The patent trove could help it in its patent litigation with the likes of Apple, Google and RIM. Furthermore, Ericsson will also contribute 100 additional patent assets annually to Unwired Planet from 2014 through 2018.

Unwired Planet is what was left of Openwave Systems after the firm sold its messaging and mediation businesses to Marlin Equity Partners in April 2012. Unwired Planet will pay Ericsson revenue it gets from the patents – from 20 to 70 per cent, depending on the revenue value.
