Nobody knows how network slicing works or what edge computing looks like, Tetsuya tells Guy Daniels. So in answer to the question ‘does 5G need NFV to be in place’, he says that at this stage he’s not sure. In some cases (depending on the telco) it’s not necessary to deploy NFV at all, he says. It all depends on the user scenario and the corresponding service requirements. But the fact that there needs to be a special workshop at this ETSI meeting might indicate that there is currently a lack of understanding between the 5G and NFV camps, he says, and part of that problem is that many people are using the same terminology for different things.
