Virtualized Business CPE: Provisioning CPE devices for Ethernet Private Line service using OpenDaylight

Introduction

This PoC uses a laptop PC running Ubuntu Linux, OpenDaylight Lithium release and CableLabs-developed prototype APIs and OpenDaylight plug-in to show how a simple application can call northbound APIs to request configuration of simple CPEs to provide business service, then establish Ethernet Private Line point-to-point service between the CPEs.

The PoC uses the CableLabs-developed prototype APIs listed below:

  • Ethernet Services Manager RESTful API
  • Ethernet Virtual Connection (EVC) Manager RESTful API
  • Class of Service Manager RESTful API

In addition the PoC implements a CableLabs-developed prototype OpenDaylight feature plug-in: UNI Manager

The UNI Manager plug in is called by the northbound APIs listed above and uses OpenDaylight OVSDB southbound API to configure instances of Open vSwitch (OVS) running on two Raspberry Pis with attributes of a User Network Interface then establishes a GRE tunnel between the Raspberry Pis, emulating an Ethernet Private Line connection.

A CableLabs-developed web UI enables a user to define some classes of service and initiate the creation of the EPL service.
